The Supervising Attorney of the Systemic Impact Unit (SIU) will supervise the impact advocacy of CLA SoCal and their team of staff attorneys and paralegal. This full-time, hybrid, exempt position reports to the Director of Legal Services and can be based in any of their three offices: Compton, Norwalk, or Santa Ana. SIU seeks to effect meaningful social and legal change that benefits vulnerable low-income and historically marginalized communities in southeast Los Angeles and Orange Counties. SIU uses an array of tools–writs, appeals, impact litigation, and policy advocacy–to achieve the best possible outcomes for their client communities.
Responsibilities:
- Identify systemic issues affecting client communities and lead impact litigation and policy advocacy efforts.
- Build and manage partnerships with community organizations, advocates, pro bono counsel, and co-counsel.
- Lead case reviews, develop legal strategies, and establish best practices for impact advocacy.
- Represent the organization through trainings, outreach, conferences, media, and community engagement.
- Collaborate on communications, policy initiatives, and advocacy campaigns.
- Recruit, train, supervise, and mentor attorneys, fellows, law students, paralegals, and administrative staff.
- Oversee staff development, performance evaluations, and professional growth.
- Manage grant deliverables and reporting requirements to support funding objectives.
- Perform other duties as needed to advance the organization's mission.
Education:
- Juris Doctor and active license in good standing with the State Bar of California Bar or member of another state bar and ability to register as a legal services provider.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 10 years of experience in complex, impact, appellate, and writ litigation.
- Extensive state and/or federal court litigation experience, including discovery, motion practice, remedies, and trial advocacy.
- Demonstrated commitment to public interest law, policy advocacy, and civil rights-related practice areas.
- Experience collaborating with pro bono and community partners.
- Strong legal research, writing, communication, and case management skills.
- Proven experience supervising, mentoring, and developing staff.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities independently and exercise sound judgment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and legal technology tools.
- Experience providing trauma-informed client services preferred.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel throughout the service area.
- Bilingual skills preferred.
- Commitment to the organization's mission and values required.
Location: Can be based in Compton, Norwalk, or Santa Ana.
Annual salary range with benefits: $95,000 - $130,000.
