The Supervising Deputy County Counsel supervises assigned staff and handles complex legal matters, advising County officials on finance and governance issues and representing the County and its departments in state and federal courts and administrative proceedings.

The position primarily provides legal advice and litigation support to the Treasurer/Tax Collector on treasury, tax collection, property tax sales, excess proceeds, tax penalties, transient occupancy tax, documentary transfer tax, and cannabis tax matters, including related litigation and bankruptcy proceedings. The attorney also supports other Finance and General Government departments on elections, public finance, taxation, and governance matters, including the Brown Act, California Public Records Act, conflicts of interest, political activities, and records retention. Duties may include advising legislative bodies and drafting ordinances and resolutions.

The ideal candidate has experience with local property taxation, the Revenue and Taxation Code, and related civil litigation and/or bankruptcy matters. Strong analytical, legal research, writing, and courtroom skills are required. Experience supervising legal staff and managing complex cases or projects is preferred.

Qualifications:

Active membership in good standing with the State Bar of California; AND

• 2 years as a Principal Deputy County Counsel Attorney with San Diego County or at an equivalent level with another California county or city, handling complex cases; OR

• 7 years of post-bar civil legal experience handling civil law matters in a public or private law office.

Highly desirable: Public entity experience representing boards and commissions, litigating public entity cases, and drafting ordinances, policies, and public contracts.

The annual salary with benefits is $212,804 - $258,668. Deadline to apply is 9/28.
