The Principal Deputy County Counsel independently handles complex, high-impact legal matters affecting the County, its officers, boards, and districts. This position provides legal advice and litigation support to the Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk (ARCC) as part of the Finance and General Government Team.
The attorney will advise and represent the Assessor in Assessment Appeals Board (AAB) matters, including witness preparation, hearings, proposed findings, and writs of administrative mandate challenging AAB decisions. Additional duties include policy and procedure development, contract review, legislative support, California Public Records Act requests, and records retention.
The attorney will complete appraiser training provided by the Assessor's Office and must be available in person for AAB hearings, generally held Thursdays. Remote and in-person work will be permitted.
The ideal candidate has experience with assessment practices, the Revenue and Taxation Code, and writ of administrative mandate or refund litigation. Strong analytical, legal research, writing, and courtroom skills and the ability to work effectively with attorneys and support staff are required.
Active membership in good standing with the State Bar of California; AND

2 years as a Senior Deputy County Counsel Attorney with San Diego County or at an equivalent level with another California county or city, handling complex cases or assignments; OR

5 years of post-bar civil legal experience handling civil law matters in a public or private law office.
Highly desirable: Public entity experience representing boards and commissions, litigating public entity cases, and drafting ordinances, policies, and public contracts.
The annual salary with benefits is $191,692 - $233,001. Deadline to apply is 9/28.
