    The Civil Advisory Division of the San Diego City Attorney’s Office is recruiting to fill a Deputy City Attorney position in the Council and Government Services Unit. The deputy will primarily work with the Public Records Act and Communications team but will also have the opportunity to handle other types of work, as time permits. The deputy will report directly to the Chief Deputy City Attorney of this Unit.

    The Council and Government Services Unit provides legal advice and support to the City Council, Council staff, and Council Administration. The group works closely with the Council President’s Office and provides legal support during open and closed session Council meetings.

    The Office of the City Attorney seeks an attorney to join our General Government & Finance Team. The attorney will work closely with various City leaders, departments, and bodies, including the City Administrator and City Council, on a wide range of municipal government and finance matters. 

    Duties may include, but will not be limited to, providing legal advice and review related to: municipal finance, revenue, taxation, fees, contracting and procurement, elections and ballot measures, ethics and conflict of interest, public records, open meetings laws, and parliamentary procedure. An interest in these areas of law is a must, and experience is a plus. 

    Duties may include but are not limited to:

    • Advising the City Administrator, Department heads and staff, the Mayor, City Council, and boards and commissions on general government matters such as municipal finance, taxes and fees, public ethics and conflict of interest, elections and ballot measures, public contracting, grant agreements, open meetings, public records laws, constitutional law, and parliamentary procedure.
    • Preparing legal opinions, ordinances, resolutions, and other legal documents.
    • Representing the City Attorney at meetings of the City Council, City Council committees and other public meetings, and providing advice on parliamentary procedure, the Brown Act and local Sunshine laws.

    We are currently seeking to add a full time associate attorney, 0-5 years of experience in civil litigation and/or family law preferred but willing to consider a highly motivated new admittee who's willing to commit to learning the practice and sticking around long-term. The associate attorney will primarily be reporting and working directly with the managing partner who primarily works in Civil Litigation, Family and Criminal Law.

    The ideal candidate should ideally have experience drafting discovery, pleadings, dispositive motions, including motions for summary judgment and trial preparation. Admission to and familiarity with US District Court litigation is helpful. Excellent writing and research skills are required.     REQUIREMENTS:

    • Active member of the State Bar of California (Will consider an applicant who is pending bar results)
    • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Essential Forms and Timeslips.
    • Excellent writing and proofreading skills.
    • The ability to communicate effectively and handle multiple priorities in a timely and professional manner.
